Discovering Activities

Introduction

The Discover tab is your gateway to finding volunteering activities, organisations, and impact stories across the Impactful hub. It is the second tab in the bottom navigation bar, sitting between Home and Messages. From here you can browse a live feed of what is happening in your hub, search for specific activities or organisations, and filter results by cause, location, and more.

The header at the top of the Discover screen gives you quick access to the Leaderboard icon, a Search bar, and a Filter button.

The Feed

When you first open the Discover tab, you land on the Feed sub-tab. This is the Impact Feed, a continuously updated stream of activity from across your hub.

Browsing the feed

The feed displays a stream of activity cards posted by organisations in your hub. Each card shows key details such as the organisation name, a description, and any associated imagery. You can scroll down to load more results as the feed supports pagination.

Tip: Use the search bar or filter options at the top of the feed to narrow down what you see. This is especially useful in larger hubs with many active organisations.

Finding Organisations

Tap the Organisations sub-tab to explore the organisations operating within your hub.

Featured organisations

At the top of the Organisations sub-tab you will find a Featured Organisations carousel. Swipe left and right to see organisations that have been highlighted by your hub administrators. Tap any card to visit that organisation's profile.

Browsing organisations

Below the carousel, a full list of organisations is displayed. You can scroll through the list or use the search bar and filters to find something specific.

Following and joining

When you find an organisation you are interested in, tap its card to open its profile. From there you can choose to Follow the organisation to receive updates in your feed, or Join it if the organisation accepts members directly. Following keeps you informed; joining lets you participate in their activities and community.

Browsing Activities

Tap the Activities sub-tab to focus specifically on volunteering opportunities.

Featured activities carousel

A Featured Activities carousel appears at the top of this view. These are hand-picked or promoted activities that your hub wants to highlight. Swipe through the carousel and tap any card to see full details.

Searching for activities

Use the Search bar to type keywords related to the activity you are looking for. Results update in real time as you type, with built-in debouncing so the app waits briefly before sending each request. This keeps the experience smooth even on slower connections.

Filtering activities

Tap the Filter button to open the filter panel. You can narrow results by:

• Approved Only — show only activities from approved organisations.
• Following Only — show activities from organisations you follow.
• Joined Only — show activities from organisations you have joined.
• Location — filter by geographic area to find activities near you.
• Causes — choose from 14 cause areas (see the full list below).
• Beneficiaries — filter by the groups the activity aims to support.

Each activity card shows relevant location information so you can quickly judge whether an opportunity is convenient for you.

Using Search

The Discover tab offers a hub-wide unified search that works across both activities and organisations at the same time. When you tap the search bar and start typing, the app searches all content in your hub and returns matching results grouped by type.

Search results support pagination, so you can keep scrolling to load additional matches. The real-time search uses debouncing to avoid sending a request on every keystroke, waiting until you pause typing before fetching results.

Tip: If you are looking for something specific, try typing the organisation name or a keyword from the activity title. The unified search will surface both activity listings and organisation profiles that match.

Filtering by Cause

Impactful organises activities and organisations into 14 cause categories. You can use these to filter results in any of the Discover sub-tabs:

• Animals
• Arts & Culture
• Disability
• Economic Development
• Education
• Emergency Services
• Environment
• Health
• Housing
• Human Rights & Equality
• Poverty
• Recreation
• Religion
• Sports

You can select one or more causes at a time to refine your results. Cause filters combine with location and beneficiary filters so you can build precise searches.

Tips for Finding Activities

• Start broad, then narrow down. Browse the Feed first to get a sense of what is available, then switch to the Activities tab and apply filters.
• Use the featured carousels. Hub administrators promote activities and organisations in the carousels for a reason. These are often timely or high-impact opportunities.
• Combine filters. Select a cause category and a location together to find activities that match both your interests and your availability.
• Follow organisations you like. When you follow an organisation, its new activities will appear in your Feed automatically, so you never miss an opportunity.
• Check back regularly. New activities are posted frequently, and the Feed updates in real time.
